Veteran Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune Extends His Stay At Amakhosi
According to reports, veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is set to continue his tenure at Kaizer Chiefs for another season.
While outfield players often tire and decline with age, goalkeepers, like fine wine, tend to mature and improve over time. This is why Amakhosi, the club’s nickname, has decided to retain one of its longest-serving members.
Khune, a former Bafana Bafana number 1, is expected to be a key figure in the team’s pursuit of success in the upcoming DStv Premier League season.
His current contract with the Glamour Boys expires on June 30, 2023. However, it has been reported that both parties have agreed in principle to extend their relationship.
Having been with Amakhosi for an impressive 19 years since graduating from the club’s academy in the 2004/2005 season, Khune has undoubtedly become a legend in his own right.
To date, he has made over 280 appearances for the Glamour Boys, making him the longest-serving goalkeeper in the history of the Naturena-based team.
Although the club recognizes his value by offering him an extension, the experienced shot-stopper must raise his performance level to secure the starting position ahead of Brandon Peterson.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs have been overshadowed by the dominant performances of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in recent years. Their trophy drought has reached eight years, leaving many loyal supporters desperate for silverware.
Perhaps the appointment of Molefi Ntseki, who takes over from Arthur Zwane, will bring better fortunes to Kaizer Chiefs in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.
