Transfer Talk: World Cup Sensation Expresses Desire To Join Nkunku At Chelsea
An enormous bid of £77 million was reportedly rejected by Leipzig in the last days of the transfer window by Chelsea, who were desperate to sign the Croatian international in the summer.
Leipzig refused to sell, but Gvardiol went on to have a fantastic World Cup season when his reputation increased as a result of several standout performances in Qatar.
The 21-year-old defender stated in an interview with The Times that he first felt at ease with Leipzig’s choice to keep him at the club for another season.
Yet, in August, Chelsea’s interest left him unsatisfied; his long-term objective was to transfer to the Premier League.
“I was really perplexed because a month before the window opened, I was in the sporting director’s office upstairs and he said, “Yeah Josko, we are not going to sell you, we need you, we believe in you,” and I was like, “Okay, I’m fine with this, I can stay here, I like it here, all I need to do is work on myself, to play, to win something else.” Up until the past two days, it had been this way,’ he continued.
“Chelsea is really interested,” my agent told me over the phone. Of course, you would take an offer from a major club like Chelsea seriously. Leipzig claimed that they had no desire to sell me.
“Considering that my original plan had been to remain here, I am happy to be where I am. One season was insufficient. My second season is currently underway; even one more would be fantastic, but we’ll see,” Josko added.
Chelsea and Leipzig have already exchanged business this season after agreeing to a deal for Nkunku’s summer transfer in a move worth up to £52 million.
Gvardiol said, “I have never seen a player like Christoph before; he is incredible.”
“Every time I talk about him with someone, I always express that I want to go wherever he goes.”
