Football legend Ronaldo, who led Brazil to victory in the 2002 World Cup, has praised Lionel Messi for winning the Best FIFA Men’s Player award for 2022. Ronaldo, who played for several top clubs including Barcelona, Real Madrid, and AC Milan during his career, has invited Messi to meet him for a coffee in Paris this week.

Messi, who now plays for Paris Saint-Germain, was named the best player in the world during a ceremony in France on Monday. He beat his PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe to the award. Messi was instrumental in Argentina’s World Cup victory over France in 2022, scoring two goals in the final and also scoring in the penalty shootout.

Argentina’s win meant they lifted the trophy for the first time since 1986 and became the first South American nation to win the competition since Brazil’s triumph in 2002, in which Ronaldo played a major role. Brazil was knocked out of the 2022 World Cup in the quarter-final stage by Croatia after losing in a penalty shootout.

After the tournament, Ronaldo wrote on his Instagram account, alongside a photo of Messi lifting the trophy: “Football throws any rivalry to the corner – even the historic one between Brazil and Argentina. I saw a lot of Brazilians – and people from all over the world – rooting for Messi in this electrifying final.

A farewell worthy of the genius who, far beyond being a World Cup star, captained an era. I imagine my friend Diego’s party in heaven. Here, we are millions of all nationalities giving you a standing ovation. Congratulations Messi!”
