Manchester United has been showing positive signs of progress since winning the Carabao Cup, with their focus now on making the right decisions to become genuine title contenders. The club has already made excellent and patient recruitment decisions in the summer, which gave the squad the boost it needed. It is crucial for the club’s development that they continue this policy and avoids signing big names just for the sake of it.

To become genuine title contenders, the club has some significant decisions to make, starting with their attack. It is clear that the Reds need a world-class centre-forward, as aside from the 27-goal Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes leads the scoring charts with 10 strikes to his name. Although the recruitment of Wout Weghorst was innovative and added an excellent option to Ten Hag’s squad, the team needs a much more dynamic and clinical striker going forward.

According to MEN Sport, Harry Kane is Erik ten Hag’s preferred choice, and he would definitely tick a lot of boxes. His relationship with Son Heung-min could be replicated with Marcus Rashford, a player he already knows incredibly well from their time together with the Three Lions.

Moving further down the pitch, United fans may assume that their holding midfield role will be sorted for years to come with Casemiro at the club. However, if this season is anything to go by, the Brazilian won’t be available week in and week out. Therefore, the team needs a better backup, and there are plenty of quality options for United to consider. With Ten Hag’s Ajax links, the Amsterdam club could be an obvious starting destination.

One player who could be an excellent fit for United is Edson Alvarez, a 25-year-old Mexican holding midfielder who is known for his ball retention and strong presence in the middle of the park. He also has excellent positional awareness, as well as an ability to slot into centre-back. Having already been under the management of Ten Hag, he knows the coach’s style of play. If he were to follow in the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Antony to United, he could thrive in the Premier League.

Another area that United needs to address is competition for Bruno Fernandes, and a backup for Christian Eriksen would be handy. Wolves star Ruben Neves could be the answer. He offers legs and a world-class passing range that any top side in Europe would be lucky to have. As well as this, his current side is struggling in the league this season. Although they may not be relegated, they seem to have had a turn in form since new manager Julen Lopetegui’s arrival. Therefore, it may be time for him to make a switch to the top side.

Right-back is also an area that may be in need of a new addition. With Luke Shaw having locked down the starting left-back spot, the same story would be ideal on the back four’s right. However, Ten Hag is seemingly undecided between Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot. One player who would be an excellent fit for the team is Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries. He has produced some impressive performances on the global stage at both the 2022 World Cup and the Euros in 2021. He offers speed and strength and can whip in some excellent deliveries. If Ten Hag could sign Dumfries, he could well make the United right-back spot his own.

Finally, the team needs to address their goalkeeping options. Although David de Gea has been in fine form of late, it is no secret that he has struggled to adapt to Ten Hag’s style of play. An excellent fit for the team could be Porto’s Diogo Costa, who has claimed 12 clean sheets this season. He is just 23 years old and is already Portugal’s first-choice goalkeeper
