Marvelous Nakamba, the Zimbabwean midfielder, has struggled to maintain his market value despite his recent return to competitive action. He spent the first half of the campaign without playing a competitive game and was frozen out at Aston Villa since the start of the season. Coach Unai Emery later declared that the player is no longer in his plans and should find a new home. Following his move to English Championship side Luton Town in late January on a six-month loan deal, Nakamba found his touch again.

The 28-year-old quickly settled in and became a regular in the first team. He has featured in all of Luton’s last ten matches, starting in nine of those games. However, this recent redemption has done little in the latest market price valuation update by the German website Transfermarkt on 24 March 2023. The website has valued Nakamba at €4m, one million lesser than his previous market value.

Nakamba joined Aston Villa from Club Brugge in 2019 for a fee believed to be around £11m. At that time, he was regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Belgian league, and his performances for Club Brugge had caught the attention of several Premier League clubs. However, his time at Villa Park was not as successful as he would have hoped. He struggled to get regular playing time and was often left out of the squad entirely. In the 2021/22 season, he played just six times in all competitions, with most of his appearances coming in the Carabao Cup.

Despite his struggles at Villa, Nakamba’s performances for Zimbabwe remained impressive. He was a regular for the national team and played a crucial role in their successful qualification for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations. His performances for Zimbabwe had led to interest from several clubs, with reports suggesting that he could leave Aston Villa during the January transfer window.

After a long search for a new club, Nakamba eventually joined Luton Town on a six-month loan deal. The move came as a surprise to many, with Luton not seen as a club that could match Nakamba’s talents. However, the midfielder quickly settled in and became a key player for the Championship side.

Despite his impressive performances for Luton, Nakamba’s market value has dropped significantly. German website Transfermarkt, which is known for its accurate market valuations, has valued him at just €4m, down from €5m earlier this year. This drop in value is surprising given Nakamba’s recent performances and could be due to several factors.

One possible reason for Nakamba’s drop in value could be his age. At 28, he is not a young player, and clubs may be hesitant to invest in a player who may have only a few years left at the top level. Additionally, his lack of playing time at Aston Villa may have damaged his reputation, with some clubs perhaps seeing him as a player who couldn’t make the grade in the Premier League.

Another factor that could be contributing to Nakamba’s drop in value is the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has had a significant impact on the transfer market, with many clubs struggling financially due to the loss of revenue from ticket sales and sponsorships. This financial uncertainty may be leading clubs to be more cautious in their transfer dealings and may be affecting the market value of players like Nakamba.

Despite his recent struggles in the transfer market, Nakamba remains a talented midfielder with a lot to offer. His performances for Zimbabwe and Luton Town have shown that he is a player who can make a significant impact on the field.
