Messi’s FIFA The Best Award Win Sparks Online Showdown With Benzema
Lionel Messi was named the best male player at the FIFA awards, triumphing over Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema to claim the top prize. After the announcement, Benzema took to social media to express his reaction.
Despite winning the Ballon d’Or, Benzema was unable to secure the FIFA Best award, which Messi earned by leading Argentina to a World Cup victory in Qatar in 2022.
Benzema appeared dissatisfied with the decision, as he proceeded to share a rundown of his accomplishments for both his club and country on Instagram. He then concluded with a photo of himself and the message “Good night.”
Despite winning several prestigious titles in 2022, including La Liga, the Champions League, the Club World Cup, the Nations League, and the Ballon d’Or, Karim Benzema was unable to secure a top-two finish at The Best awards. Instead, he finished third behind Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
Adding to the disappointment, Benzema’s Real Madrid teammate David Alaba reportedly voted for Messi over him, which drew criticism from the club’s supporters. Alaba was subsequently compelled to explain his decision after receiving abuse from Los Blancos’ fans, highlighting the contentious nature of individual awards in football.
