“Messi Disappears When It Matters”: Former PSG Star Blames Messi For Bayern Loss
Paris Saint-Germain’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich has been attributed to Lionel Messi, with criticism leveled at the Argentine for “disappearing” in games. The French giants were knocked out of Europe in the last-16, and Messi was unable to inspire his team to victory.
This is not a common accusation against the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has often played a talismanic role for Barcelona and Argentina. However, he has struggled to perform at his best when it matters most for PSG.
Jerome Rothen has called into question Messi’s commitment to the collective cause at Parc des Princes, and serious questions need to be asked about his contribution to the team. Additionally, Messi’s contract in Paris is nearing its end.
Following Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-0 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last-16, a former PSG star spoke to RMC Sport and criticized Lionel Messi, saying,
“We don’t want it. He doesn’t want to get involved in this club.He says he’s ‘acclimatized’ now, but what is he acclimatized to? You scored 18 goals or 16 assists this year against Angers and Clermont? But when it comes to important matches, you disappear.”
The former PSG star went on to express disappointment in Messi’s lack of respect for the club, given that only PSG could offer him the status and salary he enjoys. They further criticized PSG for expecting Messi to win them the Champions League, but he has not delivered on that expectation.
Throughout the 2022-23 season, Rothen has been vocal about his disappointment in Messi’s performances for PSG, and he has even stated that he will not attend any more games if the 35-year-old’s contract is renewed. Rothen has received criticism on social media and even in Argentina for his comments, but he stands by his opinion and has challenged Messi’s supporters to defend his performances. Rothen has made it clear that if Messi’s contract is extended, he will no longer attend matches at Parc des Princes.
As the summer approaches, Messi’s future remains uncertain, and he has yet to disclose his plans for next season. He is set to become a free agent, and there has been speculation about a potential return to Barcelona or a transfer to a Major League Soccer team.
