Madrid Chooses El Clasico Over Best FIFA Awards

Real Madrid are reportedly set to prioritize their upcoming Clasico match with Barcelona over attending the FIFA Best Awards ceremony in Paris. The Blancos are also focusing on their upcoming derby match with Atletico Madrid and their crunch Copa del Rey clash.

Two of Spanish football‘s biggest rivals will face off in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey on Thursday. Real Madrid had a dissatisfying draw with Atletico Madrid in their last match, while Barcelona, who are currently leading the league, unexpectedly lost 10 to Almeria on Sunday.

Real Madrid are determined to stay focused on their goals for the season, with The Athletic reporting that they have decided to forgo attending the glamorous gala in Paris. The entire team, including its star players and manager Carlo Ancelotti, have agreed to not attend the event in France.

Real Madrid are keen to show respect and have therefore decided to send Emilio Butragueno, the club‘s Director of Institutional Relations, and Roberto Carlos, a Real Madrid ambassador, to the FIFA Best event. As no players or coaches will be attending, it is likely that no Real Madrid stars will be awarded any of the top prizes.

The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema is up for the FIFA Best Men’s Player Award alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. Thibaut Courtois is competing for the award for best goalkeeper against Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez and Morocco’s Yassine Bounou, and Ancelotti is on the shortlist for men’s coach alongside Pep Guardiola and Lionel Scaloni.
