Klopp Not Surprised By Van Dijk’s World XI Selection

Jurgen Klopp has backed Virgil van Dijk’s selection in the FIFA FIFPro World XI, stating that the Dutch defender’s inclusion is “deserved” and not based solely on his recent performances. Van Dijk’s achievement in being named to the World XI has been confirmed, with Klopp offering his support and recognition for the player’s abilities.

At FIFA’s Best awards ceremony for 2022, the FIFA FIFPro World XI was announced, which included Liverpool’s defensive stalwart Virgil van Dijk for the third time, following his inclusion in 2019 and 2020. This recognition comes as a result of his impressive displays for both club and country, confirming his status as one of the world’s top footballers.

Jurgen Klopp expressed his satisfaction with Van Dijk’s inclusion in the FIFA FIFPro World XI, acknowledging his exceptional performances throughout the year that led Liverpool to a double triumph in the FA Cup and League Cup.

However, Klopp also highlighted that Van Dijk’s recent displays were not taken into account while selecting the team. The 31-year-old defender was allowed to attend the awards ceremony amid a challenging period for Liverpool, who are facing the possibility of ending the season without a trophy and outside of the top four in the Premier League table.

In his comments to the press, Klopp acknowledged Van Dijk’s inclusion in the FIFA FIFPro World XI and stated that it was well-deserved. He also clarified that the decision was not solely based on Van Dijk’s recent performances but on his performances throughout the previous year. Klopp further mentioned that Van Dijk had requested permission to attend the awards ceremony and had returned to the team promptly.

In the FIFA FIFPro World XI for 2022, Virgil van Dijk was selected as part of the backline alongside Achraf Hakimi and Joao Cancelo, while Thibaut Courtois was chosen as a goalkeeper. The midfield comprised of Kevin De Bruyne, Casemiro, and Luka Modric, while the forward line was made up of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema, and Erling Haaland.
