Is Chelsea’s January Shopping Spree Hurting Performance

Graham Potter has expressed his concern over the size of Chelsea‘s firstteam squad, citing it as the cause of their recent underwhelming results. He has suggested that the side, who splashed out £323m on new players in the January transfer window, have far too many players for him to effectively coach.

Chelsea made a major splash in the January transfer window, investing £323 million ($388m) to purchase eight new players, making them the most prolific spender in the world. Jorginho was the only player who departed, as he transferred to Arsenal.

Potter currently has 31 players on the first team roster and he feels that managing such a large squad has become a challenge on the training pitch. He has since altered his coaching regimen, shifting away from the usual 11v11 practice matches, as reported by The Daily Mail.

The Blues have splashed out £553m on 17 new players since Todd Boehly‘s takeover of the club. Potter arrived at Stamford Bridge in September after the summer transfer window had shut, so the eight signings made in January were done with the manager‘s input. Despite this, the size of the squad is still seen as impeding the manager‘s plans.

Chelsea have failed to come out on top in their last six matches across all competitions, including two consecutive losses against Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. They currently sit 10th in the table with 31 points from 24 fixtures.

Chelsea‘s next match is against Leeds United in the Premier League on March 4.
