‘I Never Thought They Were Back’: Keane’s Scathing Assessment Of Man Utd

Manchester United legend Roy Keane was scathing in his assessment of the Red Devils’ performance against Liverpool, stating that he would “go into hiding” if he suffered an “embarrassing” 7-0 defeat like his former team.

United suffered their worst-ever defeat in the Premier League era on Sunday, with Erik ten Hag’s side enduring a record-breaking loss to their arch-rivals at Anfield. Keane was left incredulous by the dramatic second-half collapse of United and questioned the attitude and leadership of the senior players.

“The senior players were embarrassing, didn’t show any leadership skills,” Keane told Sky Sports. “The goals they gave away were shocking. The players will be embarrassed, ashamed of their performance. When the going got tough they went missing. When you go two goals down like that you’ve got to show some sort of pride, fight, spirit, they didn’t show any of that.”

Keane also highlighted the importance of United’s response to the defeat and urged the players to show their mettle.

“It’s a tough day for United. Thank god I’ve never been part of a team that’s been beaten by that much playing for Man United. If I got beat 6-0 or 7-0, I’d go into hiding. I’d go missing for a few months. It really is that embarrassing,” he added.

The Red Devils’ attitude and ability to bounce back from such a heavy defeat will now be called into question, as they look to regroup and find their form for the remainder of the season.

Manchester United’s heavy defeat to Liverpool has dealt a significant blow to their hopes of challenging for the Premier League title this season. Despite arriving at Anfield with newfound confidence after their recent Carabao Cup triumph, the Red Devils were unable to produce the goods on the day and now face a nine-point deficit to league leaders Barcelona with just 14 games left to play.

Former United captain Roy Keane believes that the result is a major setback for the club’s aspirations, and has even gone so far as to suggest that he never viewed them as serious title contenders in the first place.

Speaking to Sky Sports, (Keane remarked)

“I never thought United were back to their very best. They’ve had some very good results, but teams have let them off the hook. Liverpool didn’t let them off the hook and punished them. That’s where they deserve credit.”

The Irishman also had harsh words for United’s senior players, who he felt were lacking in leadership and character when the going got tough. “The players will be embarrassed, ashamed of their performance. When the going got tough they went missing. When you go two goals down like that you’ve got to show some sort of pride, fight, spirit, they didn’t show any of that,” Keane observed.

All in all, it was a deeply disappointing day for Manchester United and one that is sure to have repercussions for the rest of their season. Whether they can regroup and mount a serious challenge for the title remains to be seen, but they will certainly need to show more grit and determination if they are to do so.
