Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell discusses the atmosphere in the locker room during a losing streak and the uncertainty about the manager’s future in an interview with the club media.

If Chelsea’s recent form wasn’t already awful enough, they planned to lose at home to a Saints team that was in danger of being relegated.

The Blues failed to score a goal in yet another encounter. It has happened six times in 11 games since the World Cup. It’s not like they’re also scoring a ton of goals in other games.

When questioned about the environment in the locker room and other topics, Chilwell responded as follows (credit: Chelsea website):

Again, not good enough. I can stand here and say we created chances, like I said in Dortmund, but it doesn’t really mean anything. We need to win these games.

“We need to work hard, it is a pretty flat dressing room at the moment. It is hard to get into it, in terms of what we did right and wrong today, but we have time now until our next game to work hard.

When Graham Potter’s future was in doubt, the Telegraph stated that the Chelsea owners still have no plans to fire him. They even disclosed some of the motivating factors, the chief one being the absence of a preseason for the manager with the team at the time of his appointment.

That indicates that the club administration is willing to support Potter through the remainder of this campaign and evaluate his performance after a preseason with the team.

Even though they were being logical in their thinking, the dire situation in which we currently find ourselves cannot be overstated. Let’s not pretend that we can tolerate losing games left, right, and centre till the summer.

Potter needs to turn around this slump by utilizing the support he has received from the club administration. In the Champions League, we are just about still in the game as Borussia Dortmund travels to west London to protect a one-goal advantage. There is little chance of making the top four in the league (11 points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur)
