Bournemouth coach Garry O’Neil on Jordan Zemura’s departure
Bournemouth’s head coach Garry O’Neil has spoken publicly about Jordan Zemura’s departure to Italian club Udinese on a free transfer. The Zimbabwean defender refused to extend his stay at the Cherries, which meant that he would have left the club after the end of the season. The 23-year-old defender was offered numerous deals by different clubs, but he turned them all down, leading the Cherries to freeze him out of their senior squad.
Zemura’s departure has become a hot topic of conversation at Bournemouth and O’Neil finally spoke out about the matter to the Bournemouth Echo. He said that he has no hard feelings towards the player and that he only wants to do what’s best for the team.
No hard feelings towards Zemura
O’Neil doesn’t feel let down by the player’s actions, stating: “All of it is out now, so you all have a real clear picture of the situation.” He added that as a footballer, Zemura had to make his own decisions and he did what he thought was best for himself. However, O’Neil said that his responsibility was to do what was best for the team and the club. He also emphasized that he has no hard feelings towards the player.
The club decided that Zemura should train with the development squad instead of the first team after he was informed he would no longer be allowed to train with the senior squad. O’Neil said that there would be no shift in focus because of Zemura’s situation and he and his squad would remain 100% focused on their tasks at hand. He also said that he would make sure that everybody is ready for the weekend.
No distraction for the squad
O’Neil insisted that Zemura’s situation had not been a distraction to him or the squad, stating: “Nothing will distract me and the group from the task at hand, I can guarantee you that.” He said that his focus is on the group and making sure that everybody is ready for the weekend.
The coach added that the club and he were aligned in their approach to the situation, stating: “Jordan will move on and play for another club next season. As always, my focus is on the group and making sure that everybody is ready for the weekend.” O’Neil made it clear that Jordan would train with the development squad until the club decided otherwise.
